Spiritual Belly Dance

This class is designed to help students understand and to feel the depths from where belly dance movements come from…This is not a study of the technique of the muscles and bones but rather an exploration of the energy that lies beneath and beyond the physical structure of the body. When properly accessed and engaged, this energy blesses and nourishes women as they belly dance.

My intenimage of Angela Ferri belly dancingtion is to help students look inward and to discover where they actually are and to know the truth of this place within themselves. From this place of self knowledge and self acceptance it is possible to move with greater authenticity and power.

No matter what level of training, every woman is already a perfect belly dancer. It is just a matter of remembering this truth, and every woman remembers in a different way. This sacred knowledge is encoded in the bones, muscles, and in the DNA as well as other secret places where one might not think to look. Spiritual Belly Dance helps the student to discover these rich secret places and thus to find the way back to the embodiment of the sacred feminine.

The two most important elements in all of Spiritual Belly Dance are to be present and to be grounded, and both are dependent on the flow of the breath. If the breath is held, it is impossible to be either grounded or present. If you don’t breathe, you cannot move in full capacity. With the flow of breath, movement occurs spontaneously on all levels; physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

Every Spiritual Belly Dance class is both different and the same. All classes taught in this way include the basic vocabulary of belly dance movements that can be learned anywhere-hip circles, hip drops, shimmies, etc. All of these movements generally come from distinct energy sources. For example hip circles and figure eights are second chakra movements; shoulder shimmies come from the heart… However, beyond these movements, the energy of any one given day is unique. In fact, every minute of every day comes with a different energy. Spiritual Belly Dance teaches the student to notice and furthermore control these energetic differences and then to blend them into traditional dancing techniques.

The intended final result of all of this teaching is to help women to be stronger, healthier, and happier in all aspects of life, not only dancing. Thus Spiritual Belly Dance blesses not only the dancer herself, but all other who directly or indirectly are influenced  her dancing.
